Costa Rica has a long tradition of horse breeding making it very easy to practice this activity around the country. The most developed region is undoubtedly the Guanacaste (northwest), but the entire central valley is also suited for beautiful walks.

Horse-riding is a great way to discover the nature or just to take a long stroll on the beach during your trip. Many possibilities are available to both beginners and experienced riders.

Discover the coral fields offshore of the Manuel Antonio Park (Pacific) and beyond the reef of Cahuita (Caribbean). It's like being in a giant aquarium! Whale sharks, white tip sharks and mantas will accompany you during your dive. The most interesting sites are those of Papagayo, Manuel Antonio or of Isla del Caño facing the Corcovado Park.

If you are not a beginner, diving centres request: A medical certificate of fitness to practice diving under 3 months - CMAS or PADI card (a licence indicating the level).

Fishing lovers will find lakes, rivers and mangroves of two oceans. Costa Rica has become one of the top destinations for sport fishing and holds several world records of marlin and swordfish catches. The Caribbean coast is less known for this sport, unless you go to Tortuguero to fish for tarpon.  Meanwhile, the Pacific coast is famous from north to south to the Golfo Dulce.

Depending on the season chosen for your stay, it is not uncommon to see a large black marlin of 4 m and 600 kg or to follow a blue marlin at about 60 km / h...

sports surfSURFING IN COSTA RICA

Out of all Central America, Costa Rica is the number one surfing destination. There are waves accessible for surfers of all level, on both the Pacific and Caribbean side regardless of the season. The variety of the coastline enables surfers of all kind to enjoy themselves. When you're a beginner, it is better to choose the beach breaks (waves are less hollow) such as Tamarindo, Jaco, Cocles and Manzanillo. In Mal Pais (further south) you can enjoy surfing and kite surfing at Santa Teresa or even take lessons in a club. The best season for surfing in this region is from April to November with waves exceeding 3 m and with hardly any wind. Near the Central Pacific, on the Playa Hermosa in Jaco, you must pay attention to the strong currents. A little lower is the Playa Pavones: one of the longest spots of the world, it measures almost 1 kilometre long! A little further south at Matapalo and Dominical you will find famous spots for all surfing levels. In the Caribbean, from Cahuita to Manzanillo, there are also all kinds of waves, from beach-break waves to river waves. The most impressive is undoubtedly Puerto Viejo and its famous reef-break, « sa droite Salsa Brava! » Beginners should refrain from going there.

The landscape of Costa Rica, with its high mountains regularly showered by tropical rains promotes rafting. From level 1 to 5, the downhill courses are numerous and is said to be one of the best sites in the world. From level 1-3 no experience is necessary.

In Des Rios Sarapiqui, Pacuare, Chirripo or Savegre, you will enjoy a mix of both sports, adventure and observing of the nature. Some of the views are stunning and accessible only by the river. During your trip to Costa Rica and for a complete immersion in the nature, this country offers countless paths where the encounter with wildlife and indigenous people "Ticos" is possible. Parks also offer well-marked routes for example in the Park Braulio Carrillo a cable car, 60 meters above ground level, allows you safety admire the rainforest.
